Ciao Panama

A long journey ahead.

The day started out at 5 am this morning with a water taxi over to Bocas town from the marina.  I already sense that the next 72 hours are going to be a whirlwind of trip back to the U.S.  I’ve got a lot planned and trying to pack it all into 72 hours is going to give me little sleep.  I’m already running on pure adrenaline since I couldn’t sleep last night because I’m so ready for the adventure ahead.  This is the first time in probably 10 years I am going to be off the boat this long at once.

I jumped off one water taxi and right back onto another for a ride over to the mainland 30 minutes away.  From there I hopped in another taxi to take me to the bus station.  Wow! 6:30 and I’ve already caught 3 rides this morning.  Soon there after the bus arrived to take me to Panama City.  Bus rides are like a total mind F…  The excitement leading up to the ride is incredible and the adventure ahead is always much anticipated.  Well that is until you make your way on board, climb into your tiny seat, and realize you have 11 hours ahead.

The ride was incredible though through the mountains, villages, valleys, across dams, over the Bridge of America’s and Panama Canal, and then ending at the national station in downtown! After lugging 150 lbs of luggage around on my back its time for another taxi across town to meet a friend of mine at San Fernando hospital.  I met up with Brit and her friends, threw my junk into the trunk and hitch a ride to her apartment for the night. Lug all my crap up to her apartment and its about 8 Pm. Not to bad so far I guess.

We spent awhile on the balcony of her sweet apartment taking in the view as we looked over all of downtown Panama City.  It’s 10 pm and time for some dinner. Hop another cab over to the hip district of downtown to eat some authentic Panamanian food which was incredible.

From there a walk a few blocks down the road to a great pub for my first real beer in over 8 months.  A nice in house microbrew pale ale.  You know I couldn’t just have one!  I slammed the bar for a bit, rolled back outside, and we threw ourselves into the back of another cab and headed back for the apartment.  Note: I still wanted to get another case of beer and pull an all nighter.  She wasn’t having any part of that. Its now 1 AM and I need to catch my taxi to the airport in about 3 hours! Lights out.

  1. Currently road tripping around the U.S. for a few weeks. Then I will head back to Panama and see where the wind takes me. I have some ideas up my sleeve for the next few months just nothing written in stone yet. Where are y'all headed? Hit me up with an email.
